🌟 Choose Your Material: Wafer Paper vs. Wafer Card vs. Icing Sheets
- Wafer Paper (Standard): Thin, flexible, and slightly translucent. Its pliable texture makes it incredibly easy to mold, drape, and wrap smoothly around the curves and sides of your cakes.
- Wafer Card (Premium Rigid): Thicker and much sturdier. This rigid card is the ultimate choice for creating durable, "stand-up" cake toppers. Because it is more brittle, it cannot handle sharp bends and requires a little extra patience when cutting.
- Frosting / Icing Sheets (Ultra-Premium): A smooth, thin layer of real icing pressed onto a plastic backing. Unlike wafer options, icing sheets are completely opaque, flexible, and offer a brilliant white finish. They deliver the highest print quality, sharpest details, and most vibrant colors—making them the absolute best choice for high-resolution photos and detailed graphics.
📋 Step-by-Step Application Guide
For Fresh Buttercream Frosting
- The Sweet Spot (Wafer Paper/Card): Apply your wafer sheet directly onto freshly smoothed buttercream while the frosting is still slightly sticky or tacky. If the icing has already dried, brush a thin, even layer of piping gel across the entire back of the wafer, ensuring you cover all the way to the edges.
- For Frosting/Icing Sheets: Gently peel the icing sheet away from its plastic backing sheets and lay it directly onto fresh buttercream. Because it is made of real sugar, it will naturally merge and "melt" straight into your frosting for a flawless, seamless look.
- Smoothing it Out: Gently press your chosen sheet down, working from the center outward to smooth away any trapped air pockets. (If a stubborn bubble forms under wafer paper, simply prick it with a clean pin to deflate it).
- Pro Tip: Always use white or light-colored frosting underneath wafer paper to keep the translucent image vibrant. Opaque icing sheets can handle slightly darker bases, but a light background is always recommended for maximum color pop!
For Fondant-Covered Cakes
-
The Perfect Bond (Wafer Paper/Card): Flip your image over and paint a very light, delicate coat of piping gel onto the backside using a soft craft or basting brush. Ensure total coverage, particularly along the borders, before smoothing it onto the cake.
- For Frosting/Icing Sheets: Moisten your fondant surface very slightly with a damp brush or a light mist of water (or a tiny smear of piping gel) to create a tacky surface. Peel the icing sheet from its backing and smooth it down gently.
- Pro Tip: Do not overwet the fondant when applying icing sheets, as too much water can dissolve the sugar base and cause the printed colors to run.
For Store-Bought or Ready-Made Cakes
If you’re applying your design to a pre-made bakery cake, request that the top surface be left completely smooth and free of colorful decorations or sprinkles.
⚡ Tips for Professional Decorating Success
-
Precision Cutting: If your design requires trimming, use sharp craft scissors or a craft punch. Work slowly—especially with Wafer Card, which can fracture or crack easily if rushed. Note: Always leave your Frosting/Icing Sheets on their plastic backing while cutting, and peel them off only when you are ready to apply.
- Timing is Everything: For the best results, wait until the day of your event to apply wafer paper or wafer card to your cake. Icing sheets can be applied a bit earlier, but letting them sit on the cake for too long in high-moisture environments can impact the image quality.
- Temperature & Moisture Control: Drastic shifts in temperature can cause wafer starch to contract and wrinkle. Try to limit refrigeration to just a few hours before serving.
- Our Testing Note: While we have successfully kept a test cake with an edible topper in the fridge for up to 3 days without bleeding or warping, home environments vary. High local humidity and the specific moisture levels of your frosting will affect how long it stays pristine.
🍰 Serving & Slicing Guide
When it's time to cut the cake, use a sharp knife to gently score and slice through the edible layer first before pressing down into the cake underneath.
- Your Frosting/Icing Sheets will slice through beautifully like regular icing.
- Taking care when scoring prevents the sturdier Wafer Card from cracking or fracturing messily as you slice.
Please Note: Due to variations in digital screen calibrations, the physical printed colors of your edible sheets may differ slightly from what you see on your monitor.
IMPORTANT:
This is a pre-designed sheet and can not be edited. Please note, the inks used in printing the image are food colour, so even though we do our best to ensure colour matching in accurate, there are times when colours do not print as they appear on screen. This is due to a variety of reasons including colour variation from computer to computer and that printing with food colour is different to printing with non-edible ink. The colour will develop deeper over time.
