The Professional Grade Stainless Steel Balling Tool Small has a smooth, rounded head for cupping, thinning and softening fondant, gum paste and edible wafer paper. At 11cm long, it is light and comfortable to hold, and the smaller head suits fine work such as small petals, buds, delicate edges and neat indents. It is made from full stainless steel with a polished finish, so it glides over paste and wafer paper without dragging, and it washes clean after use.

Shaping Edible Wafer Paper Flowers

Wafer paper flowers are a popular, lightweight alternative to sugar flowers, and a balling tool does much of the shaping. Cut your petals, then lightly mist them with water or hold them in a little steam until they turn pliable. Rest each petal on a foam pad and roll the ball head gently around the edge to cup and curl it. As the wafer paper dries, it firms up and keeps its shape. The small head is ideal for smaller petals, blossoms, buds and the inner petals of roses and peonies, where you want more control.

Wafer paper tears easily when it is wet, so use light pressure and short, smooth strokes.

FAQ

What is a balling tool used for?

A balling tool thins and shapes paste and wafer paper. Rolling the ball head around the edge of a petal on a foam pad softens and ruffles it, so the petal looks natural instead of flat.

Should I choose the small or large balling tool?

Choose the small for little petals, blossoms and detailed work. Choose the large balling tool for broader petals and bigger indents. Many decorators keep both.

Can I use it to shape edible wafer paper flowers?

Yes. Mist the wafer paper lightly or use a little steam until it turns pliable, then cup the petals on a foam pad with light pressure. Let them dry so they hold their shape.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a damp cloth or wash it in warm, soapy water, then dry it well before storing.
