Round Cake Tins
Round cake tins are the workhorse of any baker's kitchen. The Mondo round cake pan range is available in sizes from 4 inch (10cm) to 10 inch (25cm), in both 3-inch and 4-inch depths. Each pan is made from premium 3003 anodised aluminium — a material chosen for its even heat distribution, scratch resistance and durability. The straight sides ensure perfect layer alignment when stacking tiered cakes, and the rolled rim gives you a secure grip.
The 4-inch deep pans are ideal when you want tall, dramatic cake layers in a single bake. The 3-inch deep pans suit lighter sponges and layer cakes where multiple thin tiers are stacked. Both depths are available in 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 inch widths — or grab a round cake pan set (6, 8 and 10 inch) to cover the most popular sizes in one purchase.
Common sizes and what they're used for:
- 6 inch cake tin — perfect for small birthday cakes and intimate celebration cakes (feeds approximately 8–12)
- 8 inch cake tin — the most popular size for home bakers (feeds approximately 16–24)
- 10 inch cake tin — great for larger gatherings, tiered bases and wedding cake tiers
Square Cake Tins
Mondo square cake pans are built with the 'Square-Bake' seamless corner design — a feature that delivers the sharp, clean corners that professional cake decorators rely on. Sharp corners are essential for fondant-covered cakes, stacked tiers and geometric-style cakes. Available in 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 inch sizes in 3-inch and 4-inch depths.
The half-inch lip on all sides makes handling easy, even with oven mitts on. Like all Mondo pans, these are anodised aluminium — guaranteed to never chip, flake, peel, rust or blister.
Novelty & Shaped Cake Pans
When a round or square tin won't cut it, our shaped cake pan range brings creative cake designs within reach.
- Dolly Varden Cake Tins — the iconic cone-shaped tin for Barbie, princess and doll cakes. Available in mini (13.5cm base) and standard (18cm base) sizes.
- Hemisphere / Ball Cake Pans — for perfectly round cake globes. Use two halves together for sports balls, planets and pumpkins, or one half for igloos and baby bumps. Available in 4, 6 and 8 inch sizes.
- Heart Cake Tins — ideal for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and birthday cakes. Available in a 6 inch x 3 inch depth.
- Novelty Cake Tins — browse our range of specialty shaped pans for character and theme cakes.
Cake Tin Size Guide — How Many People Does Each Tin Feed?
Choosing the right size tin depends on the type of cake, the number of layers, and how it's being served. These are general guides based on standard 2-layer cakes with modest servings:
| Tin Size | Approximate Servings (dessert) | Approximate Servings (finger slices) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 inch (15cm) | 8–12 | 12–16 |
| 7 inch (17.5cm) | 12–16 | 16–20 |
| 8 inch (20cm) | 16–24 | 24–30 |
| 9 inch (22.5cm) | 22–28 | 28–36 |
| 10 inch (25cm) | 28–38 | 38–50 |
For tiered cakes, add the servings for each tier together. Use our Fondant Coverage Chart to calculate how much fondant you'll need to cover each tier once baked.
How Deep Should a Cake Tin Be?
The depth you choose depends on your style of cake:
- 3-inch deep tins — standard depth. Good for most layer cakes, sponges and mudcakes. Multiple thin layers can be stacked for height.
- 4-inch deep tins — for tall, dramatic single-layer cakes. Popular with professional cake decorators who want fewer layers with more height per tier.
If you're unsure, the 4-inch deep range gives you more flexibility — you can always fill the tin to a shallower level if needed.
Caring for Your Cake Tins
All Mondo anodised aluminium cake pans are hand wash only — avoid the dishwasher as harsh detergents can strip the anodised coating over time. Note that as a manufactured anodised product, minor surface scratches may be present — these are normal and won't affect how the pan bakes. Dry thoroughly after washing and store in a dry place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best cake tin brand in Australia?
Mondo is the most widely used professional-grade cake pan brand among Australian cake decorators. Their anodised aluminium construction ensures even heat distribution, scratch resistance and long-term durability. Fat Daddio's is another professional-grade option favoured for its consistent results and wide size range.
What's the difference between a cake tin and a cake pan?
The terms are used interchangeably in Australia — both refer to the same type of baking vessel. "Tin" is more common in Australian and British English; "pan" is more common in American English. At Baking Pleasures, we use both terms to make sure you find what you're looking for.
Can I use a round tin recipe in a square tin?
Yes, but the baking time may differ. Square tins have a larger surface area than round tins of the same width measurement, so the batter spreads thinner and bakes faster. As a general rule, reduce the baking time by about 5–10 minutes and check for doneness with a skewer.
Do I need to grease an anodised aluminium tin?
Yes — even though anodised aluminium is naturally non-stick, it's still best practice to grease or line your cake tin to ensure a clean release every time. Use baking paper on the base and lightly grease the sides with butter or baking spray.
What cake tin size do I need for a Barbie or doll cake?
For a Barbie or princess doll cake, you need a Dolly Varden cake tin — a cone-shaped pan that creates the skirt of the doll's dress. We stock the Mondo Dolly Varden in two sizes: mini (13.5cm base) and standard (18cm base). The standard size is the most popular for full-sized Barbie dolls.
Do you stock cake boards and boxes to go with cake tins?
Yes — shop our full range of cake boards and cake boxes to match your tin size. We also stock piping bags, piping tips, buttercream icing and everything else you need to decorate once your cake is baked.
