Is Fondant Vegan?

Not all fondant is vegan — and this catches many bakers off guard. Traditional fondant recipes often use gelatine (an animal-derived setting agent) or glycerine sourced from animal fats. Some ready-to-roll fondants also contain dairy derivatives. If you're decorating a cake for someone who is vegan or has dietary restrictions, it's important to check the label rather than assume all fondant is suitable.

The good news: all of the fondant products in this collection are confirmed vegan, dairy-free and gelatine-free by our suppliers — meaning they are free from all animal-derived ingredients.

Does Fondant Contain Dairy?

Standard store-bought fondant is often dairy-free, but not always — some brands add milk solids, butter or cream derivatives for texture. The fondants in this collection contain no dairy ingredients and are suitable for people who are lactose intolerant, dairy-free, or vegan.

Our Vegan Fondant Range

Bakels Pettinice RTR Fondant Icing

Bakels Pettinice is one of the most trusted ready-to-roll fondant brands in Australia and New Zealand, widely used by professional cake decorators and bakeries. Pettinice is vegan, gelatine-free, and dairy-free — made from sugar, glucose syrup, vegetable shortening and stabilisers. It is soft, pliable and forgiving to work with, with excellent coverage and a smooth finish when rolled correctly.

Available in 750g at $15.50 per pack. Current colours in stock: White, Black, Green, Orange and Yellow. Colours coming soon: Blue, Chocolate, Ivory, Pink and Red.

For covering a full cake, we also stock Bulk Bakels Pettinice White 7kg at $89.95 (currently on sale from $94.95) — ideal for professional decorators, event bakers and cake studios covering multiple cakes at once.

Colour Mill Decorators Dough

Colour Mill Decorators Dough is a premium vegan-friendly fondant known for its vivid pre-mixed colours and smooth, consistent texture. Unlike traditional white fondant that requires hand-colouring (which is time-consuming and risks uneven colour), Decorators Dough comes pre-coloured — accurate, consistent and ready to roll from the pack.

Available in 250g at $8.95 in 11 colours: Baby Blue, Baby Pink, Black, Candy, Chocolate, Cobalt, Green, Orange, Red, Sky Blue, White and Yellow. Also available in 1kg at $19.95 in Black, Red and White, and in a 4kg White at $49.95 for bulk coverage.

Colour Mill Decorators Dough is the preferred choice when colour accuracy matters — particularly for character cakes, bright theme cakes, and designs where matching a specific shade is important.

Menina Fondant Icing

Menina Fondant Icing is available in 1kg packs at $17.95. Currently in stock in Light Pink and Orange; Black 1kg coming soon. A reliable option for decorators who prefer a larger pack size in specific colours without committing to bulk quantities.

Tips for Working with Vegan Fondant

  • Knead before rolling — bring fondant to room temperature and knead until smooth and pliable before rolling. Cold fondant cracks at the edges.
  • Use a thin layer of shortening — rub a small amount of vegetable shortening on your hands and work surface to prevent sticking. Avoid cornflour on coloured fondant — it can leave a white dusty finish.
  • Cover your cake in a crumb coat first — a thin layer of buttercream under the fondant helps it adhere and gives a smoother surface.
  • Work quickly in warm weather — fondant can dry out and crack in heat. Work in a cool room if possible.
  • Store unused fondant airtight — wrap tightly in plastic wrap and store in a sealed bag or container at room temperature. Do not refrigerate — humidity from the fridge causes condensation and stickiness.

Can I Colour White Vegan Fondant?

Yes — white vegan fondant (Bakels Pettinice White or Colour Mill Decorators Dough White) can be coloured using gel paste food colours. Knead the colour in gradually with gloved hands for even, streak-free results. For very deep or dark colours (black, red, navy), starting with a pre-coloured fondant is much easier — deep colours require a large amount of colouring and can make the fondant soft and sticky if too much gel colour is added.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is all fondant vegan?

No — many traditional fondants contain gelatine (derived from animal bones and connective tissue) or other animal-based ingredients. Always check the label. All fondants in this collection are confirmed vegan and gelatine-free by our suppliers.

Is fondant dairy free?

Most ready-to-roll fondants are dairy-free, but not all — some contain milk derivatives. The products in this collection are dairy-free. If you have a severe dairy allergy, always check the most recent product label as formulations can occasionally change.

Does fondant contain gelatine?

Standard marshmallow fondant recipes use gelatine as a setting agent, which is not vegan. The fondants in this collection — Bakels Pettinice, Colour Mill Decorators Dough and Menina — use plant-based stabilisers and contain no gelatine.

Is Bakels Pettinice vegan?

Yes — Bakels Pettinice is confirmed vegan and gelatine-free by the manufacturer. It is one of the most widely used vegan fondants in Australia and is used by many professional cake decorators and bakeries.

Is Colour Mill Decorators Dough vegan?

Yes — Colour Mill Decorators Dough is vegan-friendly and contains no animal-derived ingredients. It is an excellent choice for decorators who want vivid pre-coloured fondant without the need for hand-colouring.

Can I use vegan fondant for modelling and decorations?

For simple decorations and covering cakes, yes. For intricate sugar flowers, figurines or decorations that need to dry firm, use modelling paste or gum paste instead — these are formulated to dry hard and hold fine detail. You can also stiffen vegan fondant by kneading in Tylose Powder (CMC) to create a homemade modelling paste.

Vegan information is provided by our suppliers and we do our best to ensure accuracy. We advise customers with specific concerns to contact us and always check the manufacturer's label, as formulations can occasionally change without prior notice.
